Jailed gangster and politician Mukhtar Ansari dies of cardiac arrest in Banda, UP; security tightened in Ghazipur

Jailed gangster and politician Mukhtar Ansari passed away on Thursday in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, following a heart attack. The 60-year-old Ansari suffered a massive heart attack in Banda jail during a medical check-up and was rushed to Banda Medical College where he was declared dead.

The hospital administration confirmed his demise. Ansari’s health had deteriorated earlier in the week and he was admitted to the ICU, but was discharged the same day. Ansari, who had over 60 criminal cases pending against him, had raised concerns about being given food laced with poison in jail.

His family had expressed fears of a fake encounter. Ansari was sentenced in multiple cases and was on the list of 66 gangsters issued by UP Police.

The news of Ansari’s death led to crowds gathering outside his ancestral home in Ghazipur, with authorities increasing security measures in the area. Prohibitory orders have been put in place as a precaution. Born in 1963, Ansari had served as an MLA five times and contested the Assembly polls in 2017.
