Manipur: Kuki youth group ‘Young Kuki’ politely declines participation in Lok Sabha elections 2024 #politics

The Kuki Community in Manipur has made a significant announcement regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections in 2024. The Kuki organisation ‘Young Kuki’ has declared its decision to boycott the elections due to unaddressed grievances and injustices.

According to reports, the Young Kuki, representing Kuki youths and volunteers in the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha Constituency, along with the ‘Kuki Mothers’, have announced their intention to abstain from participating in the 18th Lok Sabha Elections in 2024. This decision was made after discussions held by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) Presidential Council, which unanimously agreed that no member from the Kuki-Zo community should stand for nomination in the upcoming elections.

Members of the organisation cited various issues for their decision, alleging neglect by government authorities in addressing cases of oppression and violence. They also highlighted the need for special attention to be given to the displaced Kuki people affected by violence.

Interestingly, the organisation did not mention anything about the Kuki terrorists who are reportedly active in certain hill areas, nor did they demand any ceasefire or peace efforts from any side. Despite not contesting for the Outer Manipur Member of Parliament seat, the council has encouraged community members to exercise their democratic right to vote in the elections.

Political experts have raised concerns that this boycott could potentially escalate tensions and create unrest among the youths in the region. This development is likely to have ripple effects on the political landscape in Manipur.
