A relative of one of the assassins of late Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, is making headlines in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Punjab. Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, the son of Beant Singh, who was one of the killers of the late Prime Minister, is contesting as an Independent candidate from the Faridkot (Reserved) constituency.

Having previously contested in the 2014 and 2009 Lok Sabha polls from different seats without success, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa was also a candidate for the Bahujan Samaj Party in the 2019 elections. He has declared assets worth Rs 3.5 crore in his election affidavit back in 2014.

The tragic event of the assassination of PM Indira Gandhi in 1984, carried out by Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, who were her bodyguards, is still remembered today. Interestingly, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa’s mother and grandfather also have a political background, with his mother Bimal Kaur and grandfather Sucha Singh having served as Members of Parliament in the past.

The decision of Sarabjit Singh Khalsa to contest in the upcoming elections has sparked discussions and debates among the public. It remains to be seen how his family’s controversial history will impact his political journey in the current scenario.
