JNU administration unaware of individuals behind anti-Brahmin slogans on campus walls, RTI inquiry shows #politics

Fifteen months after the walls of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus were defaced with anti-Brahmin and anti-Baniya slogans, the varsity has conceded that it is still clueless about the identity of the culprits. The revelation came in response to an RTI query filed by activist Vivek Pandey, who sought information about the action taken against those involved in the incident.

The RTI query pointed out the disturbing slogans that were found on the walls inside JNU: “Brahmins Leave The Campus, There Will Be Blood. Brahmin Bharat Chhodo and Brahmino Baniyas, we are coming for you. We will avenge.”

In its reply, JNU stated, “None of the information sought by the applicant is available with the Security Department of JNU.” The university later admitted on March 6th that the security personnel failed to identify those responsible for the graffiti incident.

The controversy dates back to December 2022 when slogans against Brahmin and Baniya communities were discovered on the campus walls. The incident sparked condemnation from various quarters, with ABVP calling it a “barbarism” by the Left.

The Office of the Registrar issued a statement emphasizing that the Vice-Chancellor had taken cognisance of the matter and condemned the vandalism. The note emphasized that JNU stands for inclusion and equality and reiterated zero tolerance for any kind of violence on campus.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, the identity of the perpetrators remains unknown, raising concerns about accountability and campus safety. Vivek Pandey’s efforts to seek justice through the RTI highlight the importance of holding the authorities accountable in maintaining a safe and inclusive environment at JNU.
