Dallas has approximately 0.16 million Indian population of which many are mainly settled into western Irving. With this article, we are trying to cover temples for Hindu community living in DFW.

#1. The DFW Hindu Temple

DFW Hindu Temple, also known as Ekta Mandir is located in Irving, Texas. It’s a beautiful and peaceful place and has a meditative aura when you are in the premises. The DFW Hindu Temple that we know of today was inaugurated through the following events:

  • In 1981, the idea of the temple was conceived early in the year and discussed among a closed group of devotees.
  • In December 1982, with Satyanarayan pooja, the Temple Society was formed.
  • In 1983, Temple Trust was formed and a management started to get in shape which later went on to land acquisition and laying the temple foundation.
  • In August 1984, land was acquired. But the worship was started later in 1987 at another rented place.
  • In June 1988, the old land was sold and the rented place was moved to the current place in July for devotees to gather and worship starting with Bhoomi Pujan.
  • April 28th, 1991, the current temple was inaugurated.

The DFW Hindu Temple architecture is a conscious collection of Indian cultural and historical temple structures. You can witness Dravidian style and a rare mixture of South and North  Indian classical style of architecture. You can also feel a Somnath temple (of Gujrat) vibe here. The DFW Hindu Temple follows the traditional guidelines laid out in the Shilpa Shastra. It is designed to accommodate gatherings for worship, cultural activities, religious gathering, and several community events.

Temple Guidelines:

  • Remove footwear upon entering the main mandapa.
  • No food or drink is allowed on the premises. Please discard chewing gum prior to entering.
  • No pets are allowed within the complex.
  • Littering is not allowed and people here are conscious about keeping and maintaining the premises neat and clean.
  • Maintaining peace here is considered a good practice because people can be sighted meditating.
  • Required pooja samagri will be provided within the temple premise. Devotees can bring prasads, fruits and flowers.
  • At the entrance of the temple you can ask for a special prayer to be done (at the temple or outside)
  • Various educational and cultural programs are ongoing round the year. You can check on their Vidya Vikas platform.

  • Any overly casual clothing should be completely avoided.

#2. Radha Kalachandji Hare Krishna Temple, Dallas

The temple was established in 1971. In 1972 Prabhupada ji installed the idols of Shri Radha and Kalachandji. There is an interesting story about finding the idol of Kalachandji, a deity who was worshiped by a few families for generations until Mughals forced an end to it. You can find the story about finding this idol and a hand written appreciation by the ISKCON founder Prabhupad ji when you visit the place.

Radha Kalachandji Temple Guidelines:

  • Remove footwear upon entering the main mandapa.
  • No food or drink is allowed on the premises. Please discard chewing gum prior to entering.
  • No pets are allowed within the complex.
  • People here address each other as “Prabhuji” but it is not expected from visitors to address in the same way. Although you might get treated as an insider once or twice when you address someone as Prabhuji.
  • There is often prasadam (food that has been offered to Krishna) distribution going on in the Iskcon that you can get free of cost.
  • They have the longest running vegetarian restaurant in the city and the food is amazing.
  • All the ovo-lacto dishes are marked accordingly on the menu to keep local vegans happy and not confused
  • Be respectful to all races and nationalities.

  • Radha and Kalachandji are the main deities of the temple.

#3. North Texas Hindu Temple, Dallas

The temple was formerly known as Caribbean Hindu Association of North Texas (CHANT), founded in 1987 by a group of local community members. CHANT was more of an association of local Hindus who wanted to gather regularly and practice vedic wisdom in day to day life. 

Later in 2002, the current structure was purchased and established as the North Texas Hindu Mandir for local people to have a fixed place to gather, offer their prayers, get pooja services, and celebrate festivals.

  • There are no pedestals so many devotees touch the idols but it is not advised by the temple authority without any guidance from the temple priest.

#4. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Irvin

BAPS stands for Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha which is a Hindu denomination within the Swaminarayan Sampradaya and has Hindu temples throughout the USA having one of their temples here in Irvin, Texas, inaugurated on 12th September 2010 by the hands of Swayamprakash Swami (Doctor Swami) with vedic rituals to infuse divinity inside the mandir in the presence of devotees and well wishers from across the South West region.

  • Cell phones must be switched off inside the Mandir. Please observe silence and refrain from touching or leaning against the delicate carvings in the Mandir.
  • No photography or video inside the main structure of the temple is allowed. Professional photography or photo sessions with any photography gear are not permitted anywhere.
  • Children are welcome. However, visitors aged 16 or under must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
  • No pets are allowed within the complex.

#5. Sri Guruvayurappan Temple, Dallas

An often talked place among the malayalee community in Dallas, the Sri Guruvayurappan temple was established in 2011 by the members of the Kerala Hindu Society of North Texas which has been in existence since 1985. On July 16th 2011,  Sri Guruvayurappan Temple of Dallas started operations with daily Deeparadhana.

Temple architecture:

The temple is built in traditional Kerala style architecture, modeled on the famous Sri Krishna Temple in Guruvayur.

#6. Karya Siddhi Hanuman Temple, Dallas

It was the conviction of Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji to build a place of worship for Hindus and Hanuman devotees of Dallas so, with the help of the local community, he purchased the land in 2007. In July 2009, Swamiji inaugurated the 10,000 square foot building (including classrooms and a kitchen), known as Hanuman Cultural Center and the temple officially opened with the praana prathistha of Lord Hanuman.

The construction for the current structure was started in 2013 with a ceremony to build the main Hanuman garbha gudi with Indian granite. And later it was built in several stages throughout the years which was completed in December 2020 with the Indianization of the complete Karya Siddhi Hanuman Temple exteriors.

Temple architecture:

The construction of the building is done by a team of around 30 artisans from India with one Garbhagudi dedicated to Hanuman ji and accompanied by 3 gopura. The temple was later modified further on the theme of Dravidian style.

#7. Sree Ganesha Temple of North Texas

Community members gathered in summer of 2005 to ideate the Hindu Temple of North Texas and a temporary place was finalized where they worshiped and did their festivals until November 2006, when at the current place, the Prana Pratishtapana of Sri Murugan with consorts Valli and Devyani was performed.
