Rekha Patra, who gained prominence during the Sandeshkhali agitation, has been named as the BJP candidate for the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, as per the party’s recent announcement. The BJP unveiled its second list of candidates for 19 constituencies in West Bengal, with surprises in both new candidate selections and re-nominations.

In another unexpected move, former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay has been selected as the candidate for the Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency in East Midnapore. The list also includes the nomination of six-time Trinamool Congress legislator Tapas Roy, who recently joined the BJP and will be contesting from the Kolkata-Uttar Constituency.

Furthermore, the party’s former national vice-president Dilip Ghosh, who currently represents the Medinipur constituency, has been nominated for the Bardhaman-Durgapur constituency, replacing the sitting MP S.S. Ahluwalia. Additionally, fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul will be the BJP’s candidate for the Medinipur constituency.

The most surprising candidate announced by the BJP is for the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, which includes the area of Sandeshkhali. The small town grabbed national attention due to a movement against alleged violence and sexual harassment of local women by some Trinamool Congress leaders.

The BJP’s swift changes and strategic nominations have set the stage for an interesting electoral battle in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
